Ask the Green Architect: Top Ten Green Building Questions

These are the most common questions I receive in regards to building green:
  1. Why do green buildings cost more than traditional buildings?
  2. What is a "LEED" building?
  3. What do you mean by a "green" building?
  4. What is indoor air quality?
  5. Which is better: a recycled material or a natural material?
  6. How can I determine if a material is green or not?
  7. Where can I purchase green building materials and products?
  8. Are there any building code restrictions on the use of green materials?
  9. Why should I care about green building?
  10. Why aren't ALL buildings built to be green?

About Me

My Photo
Name: James Sledd
Location: Roanoke, Virginia, United States

In March 2008, I joined HSMM AECOM as a Project Manager, tasked to develop a commissioning practice for the firm. Prior to joining HSMM AECOM, I was a third-party Commissioning Authority for Engineering Economics, Inc. focusing on building systems commissioning and sustainable design. I also have over 13 years of previous design experience with a mid-size A/E firm. In August 2001, I started an online community called MEPguide.com, focusing on how technology relates to our industry. Now, I am focusing my time on a soon to launch site, called CxCentral.com and this CxGreen Blog. I hold degrees in both mechanical engineering and architecture. I am a Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), LEED™ Accredited Professional and a Construction Document Technologist (CDT). Obviously, I enjoy working on the Internet. I also enjoy spending time with my family.
