Zoo Looks to Elephant Dung for Energy!
SYRACUSE, N.Y—Managers at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo are studying the feasibility of using dung produced by the zoo's elephants to power its heating and electrical systems. The herd of six elephants produces more than 1,000 lb (450 kg) of dung per day. The dung produces methane gas that could be converted into energy. Zoo director Anne Baker said the idea is an effort to promote sustainability and save money.
